Example scenario for Corporate Adventure Racing

„...In our department science & development, we only have technical illuminaries. Like it is often the case with engineers, they are more or less technically fixed indivualists. If we were optimally connected in this area, we would be able to avoid losses at interfaces, and considerably enhance team-work and efficiency. But how...?“

Day of arrival - Until the afternoon, participants arrive at the hotel. Moderated by the faszinatour seminar leader, expectations of the participants for the training are prompted and discussed in an approx. hour-long session. In the following, an introduction to the adventure race begins. Equipment packages are distributed and teams of 6-8 people put together, according to pre-arranged criterions.

Preparation - Far into the evening, the teams are working in preparation. Road books get studied, strengths and weaknesses of team-members and opposing teams analysed, and materials ideally distributed. Finally, every team decides upon it’s strategy and tactic.

Start of the competition! – All teams hit the road, accompanied by our trainers who will observe the happenings from now on, intervene if needed, and moderate/evaluate the overall process. Nevertheless, each team has to lead itself. The first challenge is for example the project ‘construction of a ropes bridge’, to be able to cross a canyon with it. Individualists will realize quickly that the only way to reach the goal is by working together as a team. Roles start to crystallize, one becomes the spokesperson, another one surprises his/her colleagues with a particularly creative idea, a third one tries to use his/her ability for moderation to ask for the ideas and thoughts of all team-members and to come to a joint consensus. Finally, the ropes-bridge is finished and one after the other crosses the canyon. Having arrived on the other side, the team has a ‘reflection timeout’, in which the trainer and the team discuss processes and role allocations in the team; From this briefing, learned lessons can be derived, which should be transferred to the next challenge.

The mixture of exercises, which allots as next point a raft-construction and river float, demands a great deal of team effort. The focus is not as much on endurance, but rather on synergy effects, good project management, and joint creativity in the completion of the team-challenges. Team spirit and mutual support being the central topics, the scoring only stops when the entire team reaches the finish line.

The scoring of the race is not concerned as much with the fast completion of single exercises, but primarily with soft facts. Here, the trainer evaluates key qualifications like communication- and moderation skills, decision-making skills, and team competence, etc.

After the race, every team holds a reflection with the trainer in order to make the team aware of the experiences. In the next days, the experiences will be analyzed in further group work, processed, and transferred to the typical working life. Through the versatile physical, psychological, and emotional exposure, every team member and the entire group experiences intensive learning processes.
